Salt Crystal Snowflakes


Safety First! Make sure to tell your caregiver what activity your starting! Wash your hands and ask for help when needed!


Materials Needed

  • Salt

  • Jar

  • Pipe-cleaners

  • Pencil

What to Do

  1. Gather all your materials.

  2. Set up your station in an area that can get messy.

  3. Fill your jar with water.

  4. Pour water from jar into a pot, and boil water.

  5. When the water boils, add salt. (Approx. 1/2 cup per small jar - Adjust accordingly).

  6. Keep pouring in salt. You'll notice that crystals start to form on the the surface!

  7. Pour the water into the jars.

  8. While waiting for the water to boil. Make your snowflakes with the pipe cleaners!

  9. Wrap one end of your snowflake around a pencil that will rest on the top of the jar.

  10. Find a window or sunny place for your jars to sit. You'll need to leave it there for 2-3 days.

  11. After 2-3 days, pull your snowflakes out and place on paper towel to dry.

  12. You did it! Hang in your room, in a window or on a tree!
